GLOBALPORT turned to its defense in the absence of its top offensive weapon, holding off Rain or Shine, 78-70, to barge into the win column of the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Stanley Pringle sustained his offensive brilliance without backcourt partner Terrence Romeo, but it was the Batang Pier’s team effort on defense that proved to be the difference as they hacked out the win in a grind-out, low-scoring battle.

The Batang Pier registered their first victory after starting the season with two losses to tie their victims in the standings.

Indeed, the Batang Pier came through on the defensive end of the floor, forcing the E-Painters to a paltry 29.1-percent shooting after making just 25 of their 86 shots on the way to the being held to the league’s lowest output this season so far.

Pringle carried most of the offensive load, scattering 29 points on 12-of-24 shooting, and missing a double-double by just one rebound, adding one assist, and one steal in 37 minutes of play.

Kelly Nabong added 12 points and 13 rebounds as he anchored the middle along with Bradwyn Guinto, who chipped in 10 points and nine caroms.

Sean Anthony also had a double-double, but doing so as a playmaker as he finished with 13 rebounds and 12 assists, along with four steals, numbers that made up for his three points, which came after missing all but one of his 11 shots.

The E-Painters came to within five points, 65-70, after a Gabe Norwood triple with over three minutes to go in the game, but Pringle retaliated with a bucket before Guinto scored on a transition layup that appeared to seal the deal for the Batang Pier.

Poy Erram held the fort against the Gin Kings’ twin towers as he registered 22 points, 11 boards, and four blocks, while Mac Belo and Allein Maliksi knocked down the biggest baskets down the stretch as the Elite handed the Gin Kings’ their first loss in three games to tie their victims in the standings.

“I told my team that it’s going to be something special if we will be able to hand Ginebra its first loss,” Elite coach Leo Isaac said. “Luckily we were able to do what we planned.”

As a result, the Elite registered their first-ever win over the Gin Kings in an all-Filipino conference and just the second in 10 meetings overall, according to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

Belo buried two dagger treys in the payoff period as he pumped in 22 points in all, on top of seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals, in 30 minutes as a starter.

Maliksi chipped in 17 points, including eight in the final frame, along with seven boards, three assists, and two steals, without committing a single turnover in almost 26 minutes off the bench.

The Elite also delivered defensively as they held the Gin Kings to just 36.7-perecent shooting on 29-of-79 shots.

MAGNOLIA HOTSHOT vs KIA PICANTO

THE real Magnolia showed up in the second half as it added to the misery of Kia with a 124-77 dismantling on Wednesday night to get back on the winning track in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Hotshots saw the Picanto put up a tough challenge in the first half, before turning it up in the third quarter, where they outscored their hapless opponents, 34-11, to break the game wide open.

Ian Sangalang and Justin Melton provided a huge spark off the bench, while Paul Lee ignited the breakaway in the third canto as the Hotshots coasted to their second win in three games.

The result spoiled the debut of new Kia coach Ricky Dandan as the Picanto reeled to their third straight defeat and 15th overall, the longest losing streak in the league in the last decade.

The Hotshots looked like they were merely going through the motions in the first half, which ended with the Picanto taking a two-point lead thanks to a spirited showing to the delight of Dandan.

But Magnolia buckled down to work after intermission, tightening up their defensive screws to outscore Kia by 23 points, with their defense translating to offense led by Lee, who scored all his 13 points in the third quarter.

Melton put up his best game early in the season, tallying 23 points, eight assists, six boards, and one steal in 26 minutes off the bench, while Sangalang anchored the middle and finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 25 minutes.

Jio Jalalon made his season debut after being sidelined with a knee injury the first two games, conspiring with Mark Barroca in standing at the forefront of the Hotshots’ suffocating defense.

The 47-point beating matched the Picanto’s worst defeat in franchise history after surrendering a 128-81 decision last September 22 against – you guessed it – also the Hotshots. Three of the four worst defeats of Kia in franchise history have come at hands of the Purefoods franchise, according to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III

Jay-R Reyes led the Picanto with 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and one block in 37 minutes in a losing effort.

The scores:

MAGNOLIA 124 – Melton 23, Sangalang 21, Herndon 14, Lee 13, Simon 11, Jalalon 11, Ramos 7, Gamalinda 6, Pingris 6, Barroca 4, Pascual 4, Dela Rosa 2, Brondial 2

KIA 77 – Reyes 12, McCarthy 11, Celda 11, Tubid 11, Corpuz 9, Yee 6, Khobuntin 5, Paniamogan 5, Jamon 3, Caperal 2, Sara 2, Camson 0, Ababou 0, Galanza 0

Quarterscores: 22-22, 49-47, 81-60, 124-77

THE RECAP JANUARY 7,2017

BARANGAY Ginebra came alive when it mattered most as it held off GlobalPort, 104-97, to stay unbeaten in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Coming off a relatively long holiday break, the Gin Kings dusted off the cobwebs before turning it up at crunchtime behind LA Tenorio to put away their second straight win.

apeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter anchored the last push, but it was LA Tenorio who orchestrated the offense for the Gin Kings.

Tenorio went 7-of-16 from the field but was spot-on when it mattered, leading an all-too-familiar fightback that left the Batang Pier, missing injured Terrence Romeo, winless in two games.

Mo Tautuaa and Troy Rosario showed why they're the highest 2 picks within the 2015 cub draft, flashing their outside shooting by combining for seven triples within the half before Jayson Fidel Castro Ruz took over down the stretch for the Texters.
